Food Standards Australia New Zealand is seeking for opinions on NEW COMPOSITON of INFANT FORMULA MILK POWDER

Food standards Australia New Zealand (FSANZ) has announced recently to seek for opinions on a new composition of infant formula milk powder.

As CEO of FSANZ, McCutcheon states that FSANZ at the moment is considering applying for the usage of short-chain fructo-oligosaccharides (FOS), which is a refined material from cane sugar. And the use limit applied will be the same level as those materials abstracted from inulin, including short-chain FOS from inulin.

Short-chain FOS is perceived as nondigestible carbohydrate. Manufacturers, however, hope that the usage of this material helps infants fed on milk powder to defecate the same as those fed on breast milk. Short-chain FOS addition will be applied to the infant milk powder/food and 1-3yrs’ baby food as well. Meanwhile, a new invertase microbial from Aspergillusniger will also be applied to be an assistant processing agent for the short-chain FOS.

Till now, no harms have been found by FSANZ towards public health and safety. The deadline for submitting opinions will be 11st, Feb. 2013.
